If an employee leaves the job because of military commitments does the company have to hold his position for when he returns?

That depends on the situation, but generally, yes.  If the person is in the Reserves and is called to active duty or was formerly in the armed forces and called back due to wartime action, a job must be kept if it is possible (absent layoffs, etc.)
