If I was served a paper from an attorney for a deposition, what will happen if I do not go?

If it is only a Notice of Deposition, you should call to reschedule it.  If you do not show, the lawyer could make a motion to hold you in contempt of court (at the worst).  If it is pursuant to a court order or discovery deadlines, depending on the court, it may be harsh on you.  I suggest you call for an adjournment before the lawyer has to pay for the court reporter and the like.
