I was not arrested after shoplifting but received a letter demanding that I pay $150, if I pay the amount requested can I still be arrested later?
Question Details:
The value of the merchandise was $97. I was told that I would have to pay $150, plus 10% of the value of the merchandise by the LP officer.
If you received a demand letter from law enforcement demanding payment of $150.00 concerning the possible shoplifting of merchandise, but you were not arrested for any crime yet, I suggest that you consult with a criminal defense attorney first before responding to the letter.
The reason is that law enforcement may not have enough evidence to charge you with a crime presently, but if you pay the amount demanded, the payment could be deemed an admission by you of some wrong doing.
Good luck.
