Can I sue over excessive force used on me by a security guard?

Question Details:

I was choked, hit and scratched outside of a night club by its security guard. The guard that worked at the club grabbed me by the neck and pushed me into the crowd of people. My friend tried to get him off of me, but he grabbed her by the neck as well, and head butted us together trying to knock us out.  In the process my purse was taken with my phone, keys, camera and money in it. Can I sue the club owner and/or the city?

If a security guard used excessive force against you, you may well have a lawsuit against him and against his employer (the night club).

However, why would the city be liable? Are they the owner of the club? Or did they provide the guard in some official capacity? (Note: if the guard is a moonlighting police officer, the city may well *not* be liable for what he does offshift, even if they gave permission for him to be hired in that capacity.) There  must be fault and responsiblity to be liable.
