I was assaulted by a former friend who promised to pay me; h isn't paying me back, what is my the next best step?

Question Details:

One month ago I was assaulted by my roommate and friend. I required $30,000 of medical work and have no insurance. He agreed to pay off everything to keep from having assault charges brought against him. He has been telling me he was making payments but turns out he is lying to me. I have called a few law firms in the area and they wont hear the case because he has no house apparently. What can I do? I am broke and in college so can't afford to pay off these medical bills. A police report was filed and has his name as well as witness statements present. What can I do?

The problem is that a lawyer taking this case wants to get paid.  if the kid that assaulted you has no assets, then they will not be able to collect any money even though you may get a big verdict for damages.  I suggest that you file the claim yourself in court and allege what heppened.  you will likely get a big judgment and the court will order the guy that assualted you to make weekely payments to you.  you will also be able to garnish his paycheck at work untill the total amount is paid in full.  i would keep shopping for a lawyer that will help you here as the case is rather simple and you are only looking to get a judgment that you can then make this guy's life miserable.
