I was asked to keep a dog because the person who had him couldn't take care of any longer. The real owner is in Iraq . Can she take him from me?

Question Details: I was asked to keep a dog because the person caring for him couldn't afford to keep him any longer. The dog was very thin and not up to date on shots. I have gotten him healthy and shots, and also had to pay pet deposit to my apartment. I have fallen in love with dog and I'm afraid that when real owner comes back from Iraq she will try to take him from me. Will I have to turn him over?

I think you know the answer--after all, you wrote "the real owner." Yes, you will have to give the dog back to the person who actually owns him. The failure of a person who was acting as a caretaker--but who did not in fact own the dog--to care for it does not affect ownership. You certainly have my sympathy, and hopefully the owner will let you keep the dog given that she's been away and you've been caring for it, but if the owner wants it back, you'll need to return it.
