I was in a car accident whan I was a minor but I will be 18 in a month, how do I start the process of receiving my compensation?

Question Details:

When I was about the age of 3 or 4, I was involved in a car accident which killed my mother. I know there was some monetary compensation which was granted to me, but my dad refuses to help me start the processes of receiving and opening the bank account. I read in the FAQ that I am able to access this money when I reach the age of 18, but how do I start the process? My dad is not being compliant and claims that he has to testify in front of a judge that I am "mature" enough to receive the money. However, this does not seem logical, as once 18, I am considered an adult.

If you know the name of the insurance company or person that is holding the money, then you need to hire a lawyer to enforce your rights to the money.  First off, your dad is wrong about him having to testify before a judge that you are mature enough to get the money.  you are entitled to this money as a matter of contract law.  in other words, there is an account that has this money in it and there is an entity that is managing the money and will be obligated to release it to you upon making your claim.  On the FAQ there should be a number to call for iformation.  you need to call the number and ask who the entity is that you have to apply to in order to obtain the money.  you may have to hire a lawyer to help you.  most lawyers will meet with yo for free and will help you acces this money.  your dad is just afraid that you may blow the money on the wrong things and is just trying to look out for you.  i suggest having a discussion with you dad and meet with a financial planner to inform you as to how you should save and manage this money.  i suggest using the money for college.
