I received a letter from attorney for creditor - says to respond within 30 days

Question Details: I received a letter from attorney for one of my creditors on Sept 26 - said to respond within 30 days of receiving letter - this is attempt to collect a debt, etc. Today, Oct 12, I received a summons from this attorney for the creditor. How can they submit summons when I haven't responded yet because I have 30 days to do so? Then the creditor also called me to see if we could work something out. I want to make sure what my legal rights are and what I should do next. Should I contact their attorney (who sent me the letter) and find out why I received a summons prior to the 30 day deadline

I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law.  The lawyer may file suit before the expiration of the 30 days in the letter.  I suggest that you call the lawyer to try to negotiate a deal as far as paying down the debt or making a lump sum cash payment to get rid of the debt.  You shoudl aslo enter an appearance in the court case so you do not get defaulted.  I suggest you talk to a lawyer and hire one to help you if you can afford it.
