The answer is most likely not unless the debt is secured by your home or something else of value. Credit card debt is generally unsecured, so the most they could do is obtain a judgment against you. Unfortunately, that would be a blemish on your credit report. To avoid a judgment, discuss the matter with your creditors and see if paying them a nominal amount every month would suffice until you are in the position to make larger payments.
The answer is yes, subject to specific state exemptions, they can do this. If credit card companies go to court and obtain judgements they can seize personal assets, garnish bank accounts/wages, and place liens on any real estate that you own.
However, they would not be able to take your home. They would have to wait until you sold it to collect on the judgement. Note: Until they so do collect, interest will accrue.
You may be a candidate for bankruptcy. And you may be able to keep keep certain assets as well. Here's a link to a site that will be of help and explain things further: http://www.uscourts.gov/bankruptcycourts/bankruptcybasics.html
