I need help paying the mortgage while my father is in prison, can I do anything?

Question Details:

My father is in federal prison and I need help paying the mortgage until he is released. My name is not on the mortage and I can't seem to get any financing or modifications on mortgage. Is there any resource for my particular situation? Where can I receive some assistance?

No, unfortunately there is no particular resource for this situation. Banks and other lenders are not required to make loans, modifications, extend forebearance, etc. Whether they do so is entirely at their own discretion, depending on whether they think the person or situation is a good risk or generally worthwhile. Furthermore, since your name is not on the mortgage, you have no legal interest in the mortgage or in the home, so banks couldn't deal with you on them even if they wanted to. Even w/out being on the mortgage, if you can find the money, the bank will accept it from you--all they care about is that they get their money on time.

The only suggestion I have is to contact the prison and ask whether the prison is aware of any ways to manage this situation or any prisoners' families support groups may be able to help.
