Can I be charged for getting a copy of my medical records?

Question Details:

I'm changing doctors and have requested my records to bring to my new doctor. The doctor's office is telling me I have to pay $1 per page for my records.

Yes, your doctor may charge you for making copies. It costs money to make copies--e.g. paper, toner, staff time, etc.--and the doctor is not requied to subsidize this for you. You have an absolute right to get the records, but the doctor's office is not required to provide them for free, but may charge a reasonable fee.
