Can a company put exempt employees on furlough more than once?

Question Details:

I have been on furlough for 6 months, and have recently been taken off furlough. Can a company in IN put exempt employees on furlough more than once? Are there federal laws for the number of times an employer can place you on furlough during an economic down turn?

Employment and Labor Law Answers

In the absence of an employment contract or impermissible discrimination (e.g. against a race, sex, religion, age over 40, disability, etc.), a company can furlough employees as long and as often as it likes. After all, the company could simply lay employees or terminate them completely if it chose to, lor reduce their salaries; therefore, the company could instead furlough them.
