There are protective orders that prohibit you from being within a certain distance or the person and there are no contact orders that prohibit the people from communicating or from being in the same location/having contact.  Most of the time the order is a no contact order and a protective order.  If you simply have a protective order, then you may be able to place a phone call to the person.  However, you want to be very careful about this as your phone call may result in the person contacting the court to blame you for violating the order.  To avoid this situation, you need to call the state's attorney or the court counselor that may have met with you and ask them to contact the person for you, or have  a friend or relative call the person to communicate your message.  Since the order is against him, you cannot get in trouble, but you want to make sure that you try other channels of communicating if you can.  if you cannot, then you should not have any issues with calling the person, unless there is a no contact order.  you need to clarify with the state's attorney before you make any direct call, that this is ok.  Do not make any direct calls untill you clarified this with the state's attorney.
