I canceled my lease before the commencement date can I still get my deposit back?

Question Details: I signed a 1 year lease that took affect on August 1st 2009 and a issue with my job occured and so I had to cancel my lease on June 29th can I still get my deposit back since the lease hadnt taken legal effect until August 1st.

No. The lease "takes effect" when it is signed, even if the move in or possession date is later. Once you signed it, you're bound, and if you cancel the lease, you are on the hook for the monies owed under it, including any deposit.
