If I bought a car from a private owner and found out that it has a gas leak from the tank, can I get him to pay for it?

Question Details:

Purchased 5 months ago. Filled full for the first time 3 months ago. Fixed this week. It leaks at the tank's rusted seam which is at the 1/2 full area. It was immediately noticeable coming out as a steady 3-5 second drip. The only way to determine the issue is to fill it up, and no one does that during a test drive. His daughters car. His name on the title, and all repair receipts from the glove compartment. She drove, he paid. When I asked him questions about the car he would answer "my daughter said","my daughter told me". Seems to me daughter would have told him. Parts $100

Generally not.  Sales are as-is.  You are supposed to get an inspection before you buy.
