What rights do you get back when civil rights are restored?
Question Details:
I had a restoration of my civil rights after a criminal conviction. Does this mean I also can purchase, possess and carry a firearm now?
A felony suspends the following civil rights of the person sentenced: the right to vote; the right to hold public office; the right to serve as a juror; and the right to possess a gun or firearm.
My research suggests, that in AZ, restoration of your civil rights reinstates any and all rights that were taken away as a result of your conviction. That being the case, all of the above rights should once again be yours by virtue of the restoration, unless such restoration specifically excludes restoration of gun rights.
Note: Restoration of your gun rights under these circumstances is also supported by federal law. 18 U.S.C. §921(a)(20); again unless the restoration specifically excludes such rights.
Since this can get complicated, you should consult with an attorney in your area as to all of this.
