I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law.  Driving with a suspended license is a misdemeanor and subjects you to a loss of license and a fine and jail in   most states.  I do not think it is a bad idea to represent yourself here.  However, i think that you need to obtain a copy of the credit card bill showing the payment that you made so you can show the state's atty that you did not ignore the ticket and you had reason to believe that your license was not suspended.  You should be able to resolve the ticket if you ask the state to get a continuance to go to the DMV to pay whatever reinstatement fees to get your license back and that will allow the state to drop the charges.
