Question: Employment and Labor - California

Asked on 11/6/2009

Am I eligible for unemployment if I had to re-locate??

My husband was injured and lost his job; now on SSDI. We had to relocate 80 miles from my job and I am not able to commute. We had to file bankruptcy.

Not only because I don't know all the specific facts of your case, but also because the unemployment office uses its own criteria for determining whether or not to award unemployment, it's impossible to answer your question. However, the California Employment Development Department does publish a "Benefits Determination Guide" on its website: http://www.edd.ca.gov/UIBDG/. This guide is used by personnel of the department to make decisions about eligibility for unemployment benefits. The various scenarios covered include: Able and Available to Work, and Voluntary Quit. Voluntary Quit most likely contains situations similar to yours. Review this Guide for ideas of what you need to prove to support your claim for unemployment benefits.
