I am not sure whether you just received a demand letter or a summons and complaint.  Since you stated that the letter required that you dispute the debt in writing, I am thinking no suit was filed.  If suit was filed, you should have received a summons and complaint served by the sheriff in Cook county.  If you intend to file Bankruptcy you should consult a Bankruptcy attorney immediately to determine your next step.  If suit  was filed, personal service complete, you should file an Appearance by the Return Date.  Please feel free to contact me for a Free Consult.
