How do I put the property of a deceased family member into my name?
Question Details:
I have paid the property taxes on a lot that my grandfather owned since his death over 10 years ago. I would like to sell the property but it is still in his name. What steps can I take to have the property put into my name?
Did your Grandfather die with or without a Will? Either way a Personal Representative has to be appointed for the estate in order to transfer the deed from his name to the purchaser (sometimes known as an executors deed). If the house was left to you in a Will then you are golden. BUT, if he dies without w will ("intestate") then the intestacy laws in your state kick in, These laws state who is to inherit assets when you pass away. You have not mentioned any other family members but the statute is far reaching in to ones family tree. Get legal help with all of this. You may not be the only heir to the property and you have been payig the taxes for a long time. This will at least be a lien on the estate. Good luck.
