How long should it take a lawyer to deal with releasing the proceeds of a house sale to those listed in the will?

Question Details: Hi, my grandmother died in April this year. In her will she bequeathed the proceeds of her apartment sale to my two siblings and I. The apartment sold within 2 weeks of her death. The attorney handling the will seems to be stalling on issuing the proceeds to us. Can you advise roughly how long this process should take? Is it possible the attorney is racking up fees by completing uneccesary work? Thank you

The lawyer has to properly close out the estate, and if there are bills that can't be paid out of any other assets, some of the sale proceeds would have to be used.  Part of the process is often getting what's called an "order limiting creditors," which sets a deadline for anyone with claims against the estate to contact the attorney or personal representative, and that deadline may not yet have passed.

However, after six months, I think it's reasonable to ask for, and get, some sort of estimate on when everything will be take care of.
