How long does a DUI/DWI effect your driving record?
Question Details: I'd like to become a truck driver but worry about 2 offenses that occurred in the '90's.
The fact is that DUI convictions never drop off of a driving record; they are permanent. However, for sentencing puposes, there is something known as the "look back period". This is the period of time that a court will look back into your record to determine sentencing for a DUI. So, for example, if you were convicted in a state with a 10 year look back period vary (typical), then any offense older than 10 years would not be considered by the court when imposing your penalty. So you would be sentenced as though any current conviction was your first. Conversely, if a prior conviction was less than 10 years ago, then the sentence imposed for a current conviction would be more severe since it would be for a 2nd DUI.
