How does the criminal point system work in regards to being to sentenced and or going to jail or prison.

Question Details: My friend has a pretty extensive record, alot of petty charges. He has spent time in prison for a violation. He has a Domestic assault case in 2006 and now one in 2009. The one now is being charged as a felony 5th degree assault. He's also on probation in another county. How would the point system work in his case?
