Question Details: Our home burned down. It was insured at 74000.00. The contents were estimated at over 50000.00. But When the adjuster received the checks, both property and contents, they add up to under 40000. The contents check is for only 9000.00 when that amount doesnt even cover the value of our living room furniture. We are unsure of what to do.
Contact the insurer. Provide evidence of what you were paid (the check stub) and evidence of what you should have been paid (the policy, showing your home insured for $74k; the estimate of the contents value and/or receipts for at least the big-ticket belongings. As for any explanation as to you received so much less. If you are not satisfied by the explanation, request to use the insurer's internal appeals process; if there is no process or you're still not satisfied, you might wish to consider engaging an attorney and bringing a legal action.
