Can I put a lien a truck if I am owned money be the owner?

I was employed at a trucking company out of TN. In November they gave me a check for $2960 which I put it in my bank. 3 weeks later I found out the check was not good but by then they owed me $3400 more; I had paid for a charge air cooler and a turbo out of my own money that I unloaded in CA. I called in and there was no one there. It's has been almost 3 months now and I still have their truck and I was told that I could put a lien on the truck. What do I do?
The money that you are owed appears to be based on your employer's failure to reimburse you for expenses you paid. The employer is generally obligated to reimburse you for these out of pocket expenses that you paid. The company may be out of business of closed their doors. However, they would not just let you have this truck. I suggest that you send a letter certified mail to the company requesting that you receive a reimbursement check and that you are not returning the truck until you get it. If the company fails to call you and you have proof the company received the letter, you need to hire a lawyer to put a lien on the truck and get a judgment against the company for not reimbursing you. After you geta judgment, you may have the truck sold and use the proceeds to pay off any liens in first position on the truck and you can take the balance to make you whole.
