Question Details: I was living in California as a foreign student from 2000 to 2003 when I accumulated some credit card debts (about $6k). In 2003, I had to leave USA for my home country as my visa ran out and lack of suitable employment. I was unable to repay the debt due my financial insolvency and foreign currency transfer restrictions in my country. I was never aware of this law suit not until very recently. How should I deal with this law suit from overseas? Should I hire a lawyer from my residing country or California? Or should I just contact the plaintiff directly? Or I should just forget about it?
I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law. Hire a lawyer in CA to negotiate with the creditor. you can communicate with your lawyer via phone or internet. you should provide the lawyer with some money for his services and some money to pay a small portion of the debt. The lawyer may be able to get you on a payment plan for when you return. if you ignore this, you will have a judgment against you and your credit ruined. plus, the creditor may be able to garnish your wages or take money out of your bank account. you need to work out a deal.

Are you a lawyer?
