Is there any benefit to giving a baby its mother's last name?

Question Details:

My granddaughter is having a baby and wants the baby to have her last name. Dad is a dead-beat and is not contributing anything financially. What are benefits, if any, for giving the baby its mother's last name as far as decision making and being the primary care giver?
