What can I do if my gym refuses to cancel membership after I moved 90 miles away?
Question Details:
I moved 90 miles away from the gym that I used to go to. It's been now 3 months since I've been trying to cancel my membership. They requested that I give them a copy of my new driving licence, with my new address on it, as well as a utility bill at my new address. I did get a new licence. I am a resident manager in a hotel and my company pays the utilities; Ihave internet, electricity and cable for free. There's just nothing I can get, except for a letter from my employer stating that the bills are covered by them. Gym won't recognize this letter; still refuses to cancel my membership.
A gym membership is a contract and usually one cannot breach (break) a contract without repercussions. The gym has to cancel your membership -- whether or not you have to pay a cancellation fee is a different story. If the gym is being gracious enough to allow you to get out of the contract (assuming without a problem or fee) by asking for a copy of your drivers license and also a utility, a cable bill should suffice, along with a letter (notarized) from your employer. If the gym simply refuses, contact your local city attorney, or attorney general and file a complaint. If this is a gym that is a franchise (thus large, call the corporate office) and discuss it with the regional manager.
