First time offender.. Felony Forgery 1 count
Question Details: I am being charged with one count of forgery.. I have no priors. Maybe 1 parking ticket at the most. In 23 years old. Never in trouble with the law. What could my possible penalty or punishment be. THe amount of the check that was changed was less than 100 dollars. I think the exact amount was 50 dollars. I have admitted to it, and soon a warrent will be out for my arrest. Any adivce would be great thank you

Although I do not practice law in the State of South Dakota, here are my initial impressions. The general rule is that it is never a good idea to confess to a crime -- you are basically inviting punishment. You have a fifth amendment right to remain silent, and not to incriminate yourself. Regardless of actual guilt, a skilled criminal defense lawyer may be able to obtain a favorable resolution of this matter; however, a confession complicates things. My advice is to obtain an attorney as soon as possible to begin attempting to rectify this matter and obtaining a favorable resolution. Good luck.
