Question: Divorce, Marriage, Alimony - Texas

Asked on 11/4/2009

Ex-husband has unpaid electricity bill in my name; am I responsible for this debt?

My ex-husband left his electricity bill unpaid for 3 months resulting in a $435 debt. I am getting letters from the credit agency to pay this, since the acct was originally in my name. This bill resulted after our divorce. Our papers say that I am not responsible for any debts accrued at that address. Am I legally responsible and will this go on my credit unless I pay it?

You need to pay it to protect your credit.  If your name is still on the account you are technically liable for the bill.  However, you can then sue him in small claims court.  Considering the amount that would be the fastest and cheapest thing to do.
