I am a lawyere in CT and practice in this area of the law.  What you describe is a contingency fees.  the way a contingency fee works in a personal injury case is that the lawyer is paid 1/3 of the total settlement/award.  this amount is taken before medical expenses or other costs are deducted from you as you havre to pay the costs under most contingency fee agreements unless stated otherwise.  I suggest that you meet with your lawyer and have him explain the agreement to you more specifically.
