Do I have to pay a medical bill that my PIP insurance did not pay? The accident was in 1/97 and I just recieved a notice from a collector.

Usually there is a 6 year limitations period in these types of action.  Were you represented by an attorney, and if so, contact this attorney.

If you received the service and have not paid you are liable.  Generally, your attorney should have resolved of of these issues before closing the case (assuming that you gave him the bill before the case was settled.) Contact the attorney and see what he was to say. Beware that sometimes debtor collectors buy the rights to collect on bills that have already been paid.  They buy them in bulk. Given the time delays you mention it sound like it might be a problem on the collector's end and they may be in advertently trying to collect on a debt already resolved. Write it the debt collector and ask for documentation of the claim. This problem may not be your attorney's oversight but see what he has in his file nevertheless.
