Debt Settlement companies

Question Details:

Due to medical problems and paycuts, I tried to consolidate my credit cards as well as use the supposed consolidated program, but was turned down and told I did not make enough money. So Trying to do the right thing, knowing it would **** my credit score, I sought a debt settlement company. Found one that works for me and have been faithfully paying since Jan; they have settled on one account so far. I want to avoid bankruptcy at all costs. Is it illegal to use the debt settlement companies?
