Question: Insurance Law - California

Asked on 11/2/2009
Death benefit to Ex-spouse who is also first cousin of the insured
My husband, who was also my first cousin, was married for 16 years, divorced in 5/2007. He obtained a term insurance in 2003 naming me his wife as his beneficiary. He was originally the Policy Owner of the policy, however, when he got sick, he transferred the ownership of the policy to me where I continued paying the premium. He died last month. As ex-spouse, will I have a problem collecting the insurance proceeds. We both live in Los Angeles, California.

No. The insurance benefits go to the named beneficiary. If he did not change it, you remaint the beneficiary and will get the money. Sorry for your loss (ex-husband part).
