Collection company withheld information relating to repayment

Question Details:

I had a balance of $1,100 for a vet bill. They sent me to collection and the collection company told me my balance for the animal clinic was 1,618 dollars. I was not aware that it was $1,100 at the time. The told me I can put down a deposit of $300 dollars the pay $50 dollars a month after that. they also told me that the $300 were going to be subtracted from my VET BILL. I told them to send me a written contract stating that there will be no additional interest rates or fees. they told me NO! That they are not a credit card company. They sent me an email with the payment plan and said I owe $1,600 to the animal clinic and my payment plan is $300 deposit and $50 dollars a month to fulfill my debt with the ANIMAL CLINIC. Next day I called animal clinic to see my balance and they told me it was 1,100 not 1,600! so i called the collection agency and they told me "oh we forgot to say we charge 400 dollars for a payment plan"! what can i do??? They withheld information!!

You need to simply pay the animal clinic directly, at this point, and you need to send a letter to both the clinic and the collection agency, saying what you've said here, and saying that you refuse to be a victim of deceptive collection practices.  I surely hope you haven't signed anything;  if you have, you should probably have a lawyer look at it, but the misrepresentation up front would make it difficult to enforce against you anyway.

If you are sued on this bill, please hire a lawyer, and let him or her know about all of this.
