Charge was exponged yet insurance companies find it.

Question Details: In 2002 (in the state of NJ) I was arrested for possesion of marijunana. I was driving and had weed on me. When I got pulled over I was honest with the cop. I was only charged with possession which later got exponged. However, now I am having trouble with my car insurance. Everytime I get a quote its high because of that. How do the insurance companies even know and if it was exponged why and how is it even showing up? And, is their anything I can do or someone I can contact to get this matter delt with.
