What to do about canceling employer sponsered healthcare?

Question Details: I canceled my employer sponsored health insurance on the 1st of this month and informed them I just received coverage from another provider (which was retroactive to the 1st of last month). I was told since I didn't cancel last month that coverage would still have to be paid until the end of next month (the end of the quarter). I looked up this information under my employers Summary Plan Description and looks like its true. However, they keep claiming they can't stop my payments into the trust because federal regulation prohibits them. I've scanned over the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (which the Summary Plan Description refers to) however I can't find anything supporting what they say is true (that they can't break their own rules due to federal regulation). Is that true?
