Can someone get sued for stating on craigslist that one should be leary of a company you once worked for?

Question Details:

I put an ad on craigslist saying to avoid a company that was advertising. A person claiming to be their lawyer sent me an email saying they were going to sue me. Said it was unflattering. No bad words were used. Just a warning. Can they do that? I reported them to craigslist for threatening me.

Whether you can be sued successfully depends on exactly what it is that you posted.  If you didn't get specific, just posted what boils down to an opinion that this isn't a good company to do business with, it's probably not within the definition of libel, because an opinion isn't a false statement of fact.  The bad words that you did or didn't use aren't as important as this difference.  The law also makes it harder to prove libel, if the person or company suing is in the public eye, and that should apply to a company that is advertising.
