Co-signers liability for a lease

Question Details:

My boyfriend is the co-signer of a lease with his friend who is the main person on the lease. He told us he was breaking the lease at the beginning of November and moving. We payed November's rent even though he was ditching the lease and we were planning to move out as well. Now the landlord told him we had to pay at least two more months rent and our friend is trying to take us to court if we do not give him money for that. My question is can he do that?

All signors of the lease are jointly responsible for the full rent, for the full term of the lease. The landlord may demand it of any of them. If any of them doesn't pay his/her share, the other signors may sue that person for that person's share.
