Can my employer request a car accident report in order for me to return to work?
Question Details:
My employer has significantly reduced my schedule from 36 to 6 hours without discussion. A few days prior to releasing the new schedule told me the I have to bring in an accident report confirming a car accident that I was in 5 weeks prior. Is this legal for him to dramatically reduce my schedule without discussion and for an accident report?
I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law. At will employees may be fired for good bad or no reason at all. The employer may also ask you for documentation (i.e. which as here is a public record) to confirm your absence from work. I suggest that you obtain the accident report from the police department for the town the accident happened in. Unfortunately, the employer may reduce your hours absent discrimination. if you employer lets you go, you should file for unemployment benefits.

I know that this seems harsh but it is probably legal.
Most employment relationships are what is known as "at will". This means that basically the employer can hire or fire someone for any reason or no reason whatsoever, as well has increase/decrease salary/hours, promote/demote, and generally impose requirements as they see fit. In turn, you can work for an employer, or not, your choice.
The only exceptions to the above would be if there is a stated company policy covering this, or there is a union/employment agreement that governs, or this situation has arisen due to some type of discrimination.

Are you a lawyer?
