Can my employer change my contract after 9 months of employment, and in doing take some benefits away?

Question Details:

After 9 months of employment my employer wants to change my contract and in doing so it's going to take some benefits away. I have my original contract signed and the new one that I haven't signed yet. I'm afraid that if I don't sign the new contract they are going to fire me. Can I do something about it?

Employment and Labor Law Answers

If the original employment contract itself limited the conditions under which you could be fired (e.g. only fired for cause), then the company must honor it and they cannot fire you for failing to modify the contract or sign a new one. However, if the contract did not limit or prevent them firing you, then in the absence of illegal discrmination (such as against a race, sex, religion, disability status, etc.) they could fire you for any reason, including potentially not agreeing to new work terms.
