DUI / DWI Law Answers

In most states a person that has been convicted of a felony is prohibited from purchasing a handgun.  A DWI is a misdemeanor in most states, especially where it is a first offense.  if you have not had a court date, you should go and apply to get a permit or license for the handgun.  as far as the criminal case, you should get a continuance for a few weeks until your background check and criminal record check is complete.  your goal is to get the background check and gun before you have to plead to the charge.  usually, you can get into an alcohol program where the charge is dismissed if you complete certain classes.  when you go to court, ask if you can get into a DWI program so this results in a dismissal.
