I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law.  The age of majority is 18 in most states.  To be on the safe side and avoid being charged by the state withthe crime of risk of injury to a minor, I would not leave any one at home unattended unless they are at least 18 years old.  Many people feel that 16 or 17 is an appropriate age to leave a kid alone, however, some state's will and could find that you are placing them at risk.  You are welcome to a second opinion, but, I am speaking from experience.
