Can I hold onto a ex-roomates property until they pay bills/rent that is owed?
Question Details: I live in Iowa. I don't have a written signed agreement for payment only witnesses and text message stating that he owes money.
Under the laws of all states in this country, one cannot legally hold onto another's property as "hostage" for money owed with respect unpaid rent and bills. I suggest that you send a written note setting forth that the items in your possession are available for pick up. Keep a copy of the letter for future use and need.
