Can I file for personal bankruptcy for debt that I accrued before I met my wife that I am just now hearing about without involving her?

Question Details:

Some debt has turned up that I thought was paid off from 1995. I talked to the law firm that notified me of the judgement being filed against me. I am in the middle of a career change and do not make much. Approximately $3000 this year and have not made much in the past 5 years. We pretty much just live on my wife's income. I cannot afford to pay the amount after penalties and we file our taxes jointly. I just need to know what I can do to protect her. We did not know each other then. I don't want to ruin her credit or hurt her in any way. Thank you very much.

Yes.

While you can file bankruptcy together, you can equally file separately. If you file by yourself, only for debts in your name, no one should be able to go after your wife and her credit remains good and your debts are cleared.
