Can I be terminated from my original position if I failed a background check for a promotion?

It you did not have a written employment contract, you were an employee at will. An employee at will may essentially be fired at any time, for  any reason that is not illegal discrimination (such as on the basis of race, sex, religion, etc.). Therefore, if you did not have an employment contract, then yes--you can most likely be fired  in this situation.
