Can a university create a website using my whole name?

Question Details:

I am alumni of U of W, Madison. UW Foundation created a web site with my "entire name" .com, so that I could log on, enter a security code, and then give opinions re my experience at UW Madison. Can anyone just use my name and create a web site? Don't I have rights to my full name used as a web site? Do I have legal ownership of my name on the internet? I'm concerned about this, that others could find the UW site.

Business Law Answers

This is a bit surprising.  It would be much more surprising if the foundation refused to take the web site with your name off the internet on your request, or at least altered the name.

Domain names have created quite a few legal issues over the years.  The law on the subject probably can't be regarded as completely settled, just yet, although most courts are willing to prevent people from actively using domain names that infringe valid trade names or are otherwise misleading.  Individual names are a more difficult subject, because there are usually quite a few people who could claim the right to use, for example, "JohnDoe(dot)com."
