Can a newspaper print a photo and write a personal article about a minor child without the parent's permission?

Question Details:

The local newspaper printed a photo of my 15-year-old daughter and did an accompanying article on her without my permission. They also posted a video interview that they did with her on their public website. They do this with athletes on a weekly basis.

Personal Injury Law Answers

I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law.  Unfortunately, the newspaper has freedom of the press rights and may do articles on minors and publish them without obtaining the parent's permission.  This is one of the rights that the press has.  However, the press may be liable for printing untruthful statements/inaccurate stories.  I do not think you have anything actionable here, but you are entitled toa second opinion.
