Can a credit card company take me to court for almost twice the amount of the delinquent balance?

Question Details:

A company by an unknown name is suing me for double the original balance of the credit card. I looked on the computer to look for the company and other complaints are posted on the internet. Iis it really a company and is it too late to do something about bankruptcy?

Hello.  I am a Maryland barred attorney.   Your questions are very fact specific and hard to answer generally.  It is not unusal for interest and late fees to increase a balance, but what what the creditor may legally charge will depend on the credit card agreement.   Whether or not bankruptcy makes sense in your situation will depend on a number of factors.  You may want to consult with an attorney who can look at the court papers, probe the identity of the party suing you and the terms of your credit card agreement.
