Can a convicted felon hold an elected position?
Question Details:
I have been convicted of a class D and a class E felony DWI. Am I allowed to run for public office and hold a position in public office?
Different states have different laws concerning what Constitutional Rights a felon looses upon being convicted of a felony and while on parole. For example, the right to vote and own a firearm are retsricted for a convicted felon for a certain period of time depending upon the state of residence and usually through the parole period.
However, to the best of my knowledge, there are no laws that I know of in this country preventing a convicted felon from running for public office and holding such public office if elected.
